Do your best to stay safe!
To protect your businesses from these scams and other mobile wallet scams, it’s important for small businesses in Ghana to stay vigilant.
Some security tips to consider
Mobile wallet scams are a growing concern for small businesses in Ghana as more transactions move toward digital payments. Here are some tips that small businesses in Ghana can follow to protect themselves from these scams:
- Only use reputable mobile payment apps and digital wallets such as Pocketi App, MTN Momo App, and others, and only download from the Appstores.
- Be wary of unsolicited emails or text messages that ask for personal information or login credentials.
- Do not download mobile wallet apps from third-party app stores.
- Always verify that you are sending money to the correct person before making a payment.
Reporting Incidents
You can check the Ghana Cyber Security Authority at https://csa.gov.gh/ for more information.
Phishing scams
Scammers may send fraudulent messages or emails pretending to be from a mobile wallet provider, asking for personal information or login credentials. Always be cautious and double-check the source of the message before providing any information.
Fake mobile apps
Fraudsters may create fake mobile wallet apps that look legitimate, but actually steal personal information or money from the user. Only download apps from trusted sources like official app stores.
QR code scams
Scammers may create fake QR codes that link to a fraudulent mobile wallet or payment page. Small businesses in Ghana should be sure to check the URL and source of the QR code before scanning it.
SIM swap fraud
Hackers may use social engineering techniques to convince a mobile carrier to transfer a victim’s phone number to a new SIM card, giving the fraudster access to the victim’s mobile wallet and other accounts.
Fake customer service
Scammers may pose as customer service representatives for a mobile wallet provider and ask for personal information or login credentials. Always verify the legitimacy of the customer service representative before providing any information.
Spoofing Scams
Spoofing involves using technology or social media to make it appear as though the communication is coming from a legitimate business or seller when it is not. Both phishing and spoofing are tactics used by scammers to deceive people into making fraudulent payments.
